Mindil Beach Sunset Markets – Famous Sunset Markets
Taste the flavours of the famous sunset markets, soaking up the dry season’s tropical night air and sitting on the beach to enjoy the exotic flood.
Experience the atmosphere and flavours of the famous Mindil Beach sunset markets . The tropical sunset markets run every Thursday and Sunday evening between May and October. The markets have a multitude of stalls offering international cuisine, arts, crafts and entertainment. Their unique combination of great food and an electric atmosphere make a visit a must do.
The market boasts up to 60 food stalls featuring cuisine from Turkey, Greece, Sri Lanka, South America, North Africa, India and all over South East Asia. Enjoy a picnic dinner on the beach whilst experiencing a spectacular tropical sunset. Afterwards, take time to look around the stalls which include masseurs, tarot readers, leatherworkers, artists, tailors and jewellers. While browsing, listen to the free live street theatre, magicians and an array of local and international buskers.
Perhaps one of the great drawing attractions for the market is the sunset. There seems to be a strange nightly ritual in the warmer parts of the world to see the sun setting. I’m wondering if there is an attitude that develops in the tropics – A. “There is no tomorrow and therefore lets party,” or B. “Today has been really hot and sweaty and I just want the cool of the evening.” Not sure which is the correct answer from either of my 2 conspiracy theories
The Mindil Beach Sunset Markets really is almost a compulsory must do when in Darwin – and it was so good that Lady Gaw and I braved the hoards of tourists and locals and went there twice – and both on the very popular Thursday late afternoon and into the evening. (Market is also open Sunday afternoon/evening).Share This
